In the near future, they plan to reopen the restaurant, formerly the Ranch House, as the Brickhouse Restaurant and Lounge. The restaurant has had limited hours or been fully closed since June.

Since the restaurant was closed, reopening will take longer than initially expected because they'll need to hire staff and purchase new inventory. Although the restaurant will have a different name, Beth said patrons can expect a similar menu and style to the former restaurant.

They have changed the name to Morris Grand Hotel.<br /> <br /> The Rays returned to the hotel in late July after a three-year contract for deed with siblings Michael and Maggie Buss of Morris didn't work out, both couples said. The Busses had started to buy the property three years ago.<br /> <br /> Amy Ray said the couple had retired after about 25 years in the motel and hotel industry.<br /> <br /> "We're coming out of retirement," she said. "We are planning to run it ourselves for now."<br /> <br /> Eventually, Amy said, they may hire a general manager to operate the hotel.<br /> <br /> Michael Buss said he and Maggie are thankful for the support they received during the past three years. Maggie had worked at the hotel for about 20 years and Michael had worked there as well before the siblings began the ownership contract.<br /> <br /> "We've always loved the hotel and wanted to see it succeed," Michael Buss said. "It's sad we weren't able to take any further."<br /> <br /> Amy said she and her husband were also very supported during their time in Morris. They operated the motel from 2006 to 2015.<br /> <br /> Since they returned on July 23, their priority has been to hire staff, Amy said. The couple closed the Brick House restaurant but once staff is in place, they plan to reopen it, Amy said.<br /> <br /> They also plan to continue the improvements they started, Amy said. They made about $500,000 in upgrades during the time they operated the hotel, Buphen said.<br /> <br /> Upgrades are costly, he said. "It takes about $5,000 to $6,000 a room at today's prices," Buphen said.<br /> <br /> A new hot tub purchased several years ago cost $55,000, Amy said.<br /> <br /> The Rays said they upgraded about 40 of the roughly 85 rooms before they left three years ago. Buphen said not all the rooms were used then and are used now in the hotel.<br /> <br /> The Busses said they also made their own improvements such as room furniture, bedding, headboards and other items.<br /> <br /> Even though they were retired, Amy said returning to the hotel feels natural. "We've just love to run hotels. It's in our blood," she said.

  • Her immigration story: Gomer obtains citizenship<br /> <br /> <a href="https://www.stevenscountytimes.com/news/4477669-her-immigration-story-gomer-obtains-citizenship">https://www.stevenscountytimes.com/news/4477669-her-immigration-story-gomer-obtains-citizenship</a><br /> <br /> When many local people think of immigration they might not think of her, Jan Gomer said.<br /> <br /> "I'm an immigrant but people didn't necessarily see me that way," Gomer said.<br /> <br /> <br /> She grew up in the southeast portion of southern Australia in a forest and agriculture community about a half-hour from the ocean. She moved to the U.S. in 1987 when she was 22. Gomer has lived in the Morris area for many years. She and her husband Andrew now live in Benson. Gomer is a human resources specialist for Stevens County.<br /> <br /> While she was "always very warmly welcomed here," Gomer has experienced some tough conversation about immigration.<br /> <br /> One of those conversations involved what her daughter experienced in high school in January 2017.<br /> <br /> "My youngest daughter attends Morris Area High School and she became so distraught about negative conversations (about immigrants and immigration) she heard in the hallways and classrooms. She became very concerned...," Gomer said. "It broke my heart. That was hard to live through."<br /> <br /> Gomer said she may not be the subject of negative comments or conversation about immigration but she empathizes with those who may be.<br /> <br /> Twenty years ago she would hear people discussing immigration and how immigrants were taking American jobs. She'd ask "who do you mean?" And often people responded that they were not talking about her but about "others," Gomer said. She'd again ask "Who do you mean?" as an open-ended question. The conversation would end, Gomer said.<br /> <br /> "That's the reason why I would not get invited back to parties," Gomer said.<br /> <br /> "To see others not welcomed in contrast is painful," Gomer said. "I have a great deal of empathy for other immigrants."<br /> <br /> Although she thought about pursuing citizenship over the past 30 years, it was her daughter's experience and the strong desire to be able to vote, that motivated Gomer to start the process more than a year ago.<br /> <br /> Gomer became a U.S. citizen on May 14 in a ceremony at the Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. This was about 15 months after the process started.<br /> <br /> She was one of 45 people who represented 37 countries.<br /> <br /> "For as many people taking the oath, there were that many stories," Gomer said. "Mine is not one of oppression or violence. Nonetheless it was very powerful for me."<br /> <br /> "When the ceremony started, I was taken aback by how powerful the service was and emotional," Gomer said.<br /> <br /> Judge Susan Richard Nelson gave a speech that "made us feel very truly honored about what it meant to be a U.S. citizen," Gomer said.<br /> <br /> <br /> Richard Nelson and Bruce Karstadt, the president and chief executive officer of the Swedish Institute, told the new citizens while they were part of a the U.S., it was also important to honor and remember their culture and native countries.<br /> <br /> While the ceremony and the speeches impressed her, Gomer knows the day when she will fully realize she is a U.S. citizen.<br /> <br /> "My pivotal moment will be when I enter the voting booth," Gomer said. "Benson has a referendum vote on Aug. 14 for the school district. That will be an emotional moment for me. I plan to bring my young children with me. That is what I'm really excited for."<br /> <br /> It took about 15 months, money and work for Gomer to gain citizenship.<br /> <br /> "It stunned me," Gomer said of the price. "It was a financial burden just for me." Gomer said she couldn't imagine how parents with children can afford the process for all of them. While her four children were young, she chose not to pursue citizenship because of the cost.<br /> <br /> She had to pay $725 for the investigative pieces of the process. That check was followed by a fee of $85 for fingerprints and facial recognition tests.<br /> <br /> "The vetting process is...quite intrusive but it is discreetly done...," Gomer said.<br /> <br /> She didn't hear anything from the federal government while officials vetted her but she knew they were checking. An incident that happened several years ago before she had even applied for citizenship reminded her she couldn't take her green card status for granted.<br /> <br /> Several years ago when she was living in Hancock, the postmaster said government officials asked about Gomer's mailing address and verified if she was living there and who she was living with, Gomer said.<br /> <br /> The citizenship process also included a test on U.S. history including questions about the Constitution and government.<br /> <br /> Her daughter was in freshman civics class so they studied together. "I made flashcards and my daughter and I practiced together. We'd sit in the car when waiting for my son to finish practice and we'd quiz each other," Gomer said.<br /> <br /> Her work with the county and her degree from the University of Minnesota Morris were helpful on the citizenship test, Gomer said.<br /> <br /> While Gomer waited for word on the citizenship process, her green card was going to expire. "It would have expired two weeks before I was notified of the date and time and location of where I'd be sworn in," Gomer said. "I had to get it renewed even through I knew this was coming."<br /> <br /> "I'm assuming that if I didn't, I'd technically be here on illegal status," Gomer said. She completed the green card renewal and paid $585.<br /> <br /> Gomer said illegal immigration status can happen in a variety of ways, not just when a person crosses a border or when a person digs a hole across a border.<br /> <br /> Gomer was able to retain her Australian citizenship when she obtained her U.S. citizenship. She and her family visit Australia about every three years.<br /> <br /> Gomer's oldest daughter lives with her husband and family on a military base in Japan. Her second- oldest daughter lives in Sauk Rapids and her youngest daughter and son are high-schoolers who live at home.<br /> <br /> Her oldest daughter also has dual citizenship and Gomer plans to obtain dual citizenship through descent for her two youngest children. Her second-oldest daughter attempted but the process was backed up and her attempt expired.<br /> <br /> Gomer said her experience in two countries has helped shape her opinions and views from observations based in both.
