"...I see two basic kinds of trauma arising out of warfare. One is the trauma of the victim: the wounded, tortured, raped, maimed, beaten, or shocked person experiencing or witnessing the worst horrors that human beings can perpetrate. The other is the trauma of the perpetrator: the shooter, the torturer, the rapist, the killer, the one inflicting the horrors upon the victims. Each kind of trauma transforms the basic, complete human being into someone else, someone having parts missing from the psyche, or disabled, as surely as if a surgeon had amputated a limb, or applied powerful anesthesia...."
