But it was when the Regional Fitness Center in Morris received a grant from the Paddle Nation Grant Program.<br /> <br /> The RFC received a $3,750 grant to support its effort to engage youth, young adults and families by increasing outdoor recreation opportunities through paddle sports, a news release said. Other recipients included the Baltimore Heritage Area Association Inc., Black Butte School in Camp Sherman, Oregon, and others. The grant is funded by Outdoor Retailer, The National Park Service and various paddle sport manufacturers, retailers and stakeholders.<br /> <br /> "It's great that we can offer something like this," said Brad Muckenhirn, the program director at the RFC.<br /> <br /> Muckenhirn wants to provide area youth and residents the chance to take a kayak or canoe on a river or lake in the area. Not all families or youth have access to paddle equipment, he said. Others may not know of the paddle opportunities in the area, Muckenhirn said.<br /> <br /> The RFC will use a portion of the grant to repair its existing canoes, buy new lifejackets and, likely, to buy more kayaks, Muckenhirn said.<br /> <br /> Muckenhirn said the grant required applicants to secure a partner in their outdoor paddling program. Muckenhirn found one in the Pomme de Terre River Association. The association's goals fit with the RFC's goals.<br /> <br /> RFC manager Monique Richardson said, "This fits exactly along the lines of what we've been thinking and how we've been talking about expanding what we offer here."<br /> <br /> The RFC is more than just a gym for people who work out, she said. The RFC is a partnership between Stevens County, the city of Morris and the University of Minnesota Morris. A paddle program is just one way to expand activities to county and Morris residents and also to UMM students and staff, Richardson said.<br /> <br /> Morris does not have a place from which to rent kayaks, canoes or paddleboards, Richardson said. The RFC can be the place for canoe and kayak rentals.<br /> <br /> And it can be the source to organize events such as the upcoming paddle trip at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30. The RFC and Pomme de Terre River Association organized a paddle trip on the Pomme de Terre in June. The trip started a few miles outside of Morris and ended at Pomme de Terre Park in Morris.<br /> <br /> The June paddle event drew about 40 participants, Muckenhirn said. He was impressed and encouraged by the turnout.<br /> <br /> One of the goals is to expose youth and adults to recreational paddling but there are also opportunities to teach the participants, Muckenhirn said.<br /> <br /> Participants learned the basics of paddling at the June event. Future events will include such instruction. Participants may be testing water quality during a different event and learning more about the environment around the paddle areas, Muckenhirn said.<br /> <br /> Muckenhirn said he wants RFC and river association event participants to be motivated to continue with the activity because it's great exercise.<br /> <br /> "In the end, it's all about getting on the water and learning a new skill," Muckenhirn said of the grant.<br /> <br /> The schedule for future paddle events is as follows: July 30 at 5:30 p.m. ROUTE TBD, Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. ROUTE TBD, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. ROUTE TBD, Sept. 8 at noon at Sibley State Park.
