ARLINGTON -- Max Kepler’s fourth-inning blast on Friday may have come in the American heartland of Texas, but it wrote him into the international record books, as Kepler’s 33 homers in 2019 set the single-season Major League record for most homers by a European-born player.

With the two-run shot against Rangers left-hander Mike Minor, the German-born Kepler broke the record that belonged to Scotland native Bobby Thomson, who clubbed 32 homers for the New York Giants in 1951. You might have heard of Thomson’s final blast that season, the famous “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” against the Brooklyn Dodgers on Oct. 3, 1951, that clinched the National League pennant.

• Box score

Kepler’s record-breaking shot didn’t change the course of baseball like Thomson’s homer did, but it did give the Twins an early 2-0 lead at Globe Life Park.

The 26-year-old Kepler, who was signed to a five-year extension during the offseason, has long since passed his career-high mark of 20 homers, and he has increased his home run total in each of his four full seasons in the Major Leagues.

Twins make more HR history on Schoop's 20th
Minnesota ties record for most players to hit 20 homers in a season
https://www.mlb.com/twins/news/twins-home-run-history

CHICAGO -- The Twins are well on their way to become the most prolific home run-hitting team in Major League history, taking down record after record along the way.

Minnesota tied another record on Wednesday night in a 8-2 victory over the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, when Jonathan Schoop turned on a 1-1 fastball from White Sox starter Ross Detwiler for his 20th home run in the second inning.

• Box score

Schoop became the seventh Twins player to hit 20 or more home runs this season, which ties an MLB record. Seven other clubs have done this, with the most recent being the 2018 Dodgers.

Because of the Indians’ win over the Tigers, Minnesota’s lead in the American League Central remains 3 1/2 games.
Schoop's three-run shot traveled a projected 403 feet, according to Statcast, into the left-field seats, giving Minnesota a 3-1 lead.

The record-tying blast would be all Twins starter Jake Odorizzi needed, as he allowed just two runs over six innings to earn his 14th win of the season.
• Berrios, another HR record seal sweep for Twins
Club hammers trio of HRs, sets new MLB road record with 141 on year
https://www.mlb.com/twins/news/jose-berrios-strong-start-vs-white-sox
By Russell Dorsey @Russ_Dorsey1
August 29, 2019
CHICAGO -- Jose Berrios has been looking for answers to solve his late-season skid, and with the Twins trying the hold off the Indians in the American League Central, there’s been a clear sense of urgency.

Berrios looked like a frontline starter again as the Twins cruised to a 10-5 victory over the White Sox on Thursday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field. The series sweep keeps Minnesota 3 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland, which swept the Tigers.

• Box score

“I thought Jose threw the ball well,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He got into some grooves where he was really commanding the ball the way he wanted to.”

Berríos has tinkered with some of his mechanics during his search to regain his All-Star form.

While those adjustments have allowed him to work through his issues, staying ahead of hitters and keeping himself in good pitchers' counts has helped him go deep into games.

“I feel really good. It’s not like I’m doing a drastic change with my mechanics,” Berríos said. “It’s just tweaking little things and just being consistent, so that’s what I did today.”

“He stayed composed, went out there and got through the outing. [He] did a good job and put us in a good spot to win,” Baldelli said. “I thought it was a good, solid outing.”

The offense -- even with four players who have combined for 100 homers this season getting the day off -- provided Berríos with plenty of cushion and extended its record-setting ways. Minnesota scored its first six runs in the game on eight singles in the first two innings off of White Sox starter Dylan Cease. The Twins have also hit 141 road home runs this season, setting a MLB record for home runs by a road team, breaking the previous record set by the 2001 San Francisco Giants.
Jake Cave and C.J. Cron launched back-to-back home runs in the third inning to extend the lead to 8-0. Cave would add another solo shot in the seventh inning to increase the Twins’ home run mark to 261 this season.
“We were missing some really good players out there, but if you look at our lineup, even with those guys down, I think we still had a great lineup out there,” Cave said. “It just goes to show how dangerous we are because even when we don't have everybody that's supposed to be in the starting nine, it's still a very dangerous lineup.”
Berríos allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings of work, striking out eight and walking two to pick up his first victory since July 31. The right-hander threw 63 of his 101 pitches for strikes, including 13 swinging strikes.

The Twins’ ace came into Thursday’s start 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA in four starts this month, but was able to end the month on a high note.

Minnesota will need Berríos to be the best version of himself in September as the team looks to clinch the division next month.

“Yeah, I think today’s start was a little bit stronger for me,” Berríos said. “But I have to continue to work like that if I want to help the team."
Greg Olson (born September 6, 1960) is a former Major League Baseball catcher who played with the Minnesota Twins and Atlanta Braves from 1989 to 1993. Olson was selected to the National League All-Star team in 1990 and appeared in the 1991 World Series with the Braves. In 1992, Olson was having a career year until a collision with Ken Caminiti of the Houston Astros broke his right leg. Olson played one more year for Atlanta before being released in the off season to make room for rising prospect Javy López. Olson signed with the New York Mets for the 1994 season but was released following spring training, leading to his retirement. Now facing George Frazier, Hrbek drilled his first major-league home run over the right-field wall to provide the winning run for the Twins.

That game signified a lot about Hrbek's future career. He was immediately known as a power hitter. He only had three seasons in his 14-year career with under 20 home runs. He also drove in a lot of runs over the course of his career, just like he did in his debut....

One of the most memorable moments from the 1991 World Series was in Game Two. Hrbek pulled Ron Gant of the Atlanta Braves off of first base and tagged him out. The umpire, for one reason or another, called Grant out, saying Grant would have stepped off the bag anyway because of his forward motion.
“We could have had runners on first and third with David coming up. . . . Then bang-bang, the inning is over,” Glavine lamented.

Coble said it was a matter of momentum. The Braves said it was a case of cheating..."

Hrbek smiled.

“I didn’t get away with anything,” he said. “I just kept my glove on his leg, and his leg came off the base.”

And if you did pull him off the base, would you admit it?
Kent Hrbek Pulls Ron Gant off the Bag

As Gant was rounding first base, he was forced to turn back when the Minnesota Twins pitcher cut off the throw. Gant retreated to the bag, but somehow he was forced off it by first baseman Kent Hrbek, resulting in an out.

Smith explained what actually transpired during the chaos. "For good measure, Hrbek, who outweighs Gant, 253 pounds to 172, wrapped his arm around Gant's leg. And, in what appeared to be a pretty nifty move—for wrestling—Hrbek seemed to lift Gant's leg right off the bag as the Braves' center fielder fought to keep his balance."

Hrbek's cheating antics remain a highlight of the '91 World Series.
